Il giallo oro sulla neve bianca è meglio di un catarifrangente. Al Polo ci sono orsi sempre più magri che si lasciano trascinare su blocchi di ghiaccio dalla corrente. I ghiacciai si sciolgono, ma l’intero pianeta dedica le sue attenzioni alle Olimpiadi. La nostra civiltà e i ghiacciai rischiano di finire nello stesso momento.
I ghiacciai del Tibet-Qinghai Plateau si stanno sciogliendo a un ritmo del 7% all’anno. Entro il 2060 potrebbero scomparire, ma già ora il flusso con cui alimentano il Fiume Giallo e lo Yangtze è diminuito insieme ai raccolti di riso e di grano. Il ghiacciaio Gangotri può scomparire entro vent’anni insieme al Gange che si trasformerebbe in un piccolo fiume stagionale. Il ghiaccio dell’Himalaya si trasforma in fiumi, i fiumi in cibo per l’India e la Cina, due nazioni sovrappopolate. Qualche miliardo di persone può morire di fame, ma a Pechino le nazioni del mondo pensano al tiro con l’arco e al nuoto sincronizzato. La razza umana è a suo modo simpatica, riesce a ballare anche sull’orlo di un vulcano durante un maremoto mentre un asteroide colpisce la Terra. Quando i ghiacci del Polo Nord saranno completamente sciolti, e avverrà presto, forse in meno di dieci anni, il livello dei mari si alzerà di CINQUE metri. I ghiacci della Groenlandia si scioglieranno subito dopo e il livello dei mari si alzerà di altri SETTE metri. Qualunque essere umano che abiti in un posto inferiore ai DODICI metri sul mare dovrà traslocare. Uno studio dell’International Institute for Environment and Development ha stimato che il trasloco riguarderà 600 milioni di persone. Gli umani diventeranno gialli come gli orsi.
